The story beneath Reykjafjall
The history of Ölfusborgir goes back to the holiday rights of wage earners and the building of holiday homes by the labour movement. Here the story can be followed from the first steps to the Ölfusborgir we know today.
1965
Handover of Ölfusborgir
The holiday homes were handed over to ASÍ on 12 September 1965 and the settlement was given the name Ölfusborgir.
1973
The eruption in Heimaey
A large group of people from the Westman Islands found shelter in Ölfusborgir after the eruption began on 23 January 1973.
2016
50th anniversary
A history sign was unveiled by the rock at the top of the site on 12 November 2016.
